Yes, people, this is a basking shark. It is completely harmless to humans, as it feeds on plankton. I've read through most of your comments on here, and I have to say, most of you people are full of it. Some of you say you are marine biologists, but you cannot spell the simplest of words. If you are going to lie about yourself, at least do it convincingly. Regardless, this is a wonderful picture.

beautiful miracle of nature
kathrin posted on 2007-10-23 21:56:36

I think it looks like a painting, and must be really hard to take a picture like this one anyway. I would totally freak out, even if it doesn't eat me it could certainly hurt me or something. Anyway I congratulate the person who made this thing, it's beautiful.

Guest posted on 2007-10-14 04:13:42

well idk, but it's either a painting, or a picture made to look like a painting
Guest posted on 2007-09-16 01:53:37

all though it's got a mouth like my sister!
bmxdude posted on 2007-09-11 08:05:42

Try enlarging the picture. Does anyone else think that this is a painting, not a photo? I think it's georgeous, but I thought it was a photo. I'm thinking it's not.
Tracy posted on 2007-08-11 01:13:15

It`s a basking shark.I live on the west coast of scotland and you see these harmless sharks in our waters quite often.
alison posted on 2004-04-04 02:00:11

Yes, this is a basking shark. very big & just as harmless as a whale shark. A megamouth is also very big but its head is more round and blunt. They also feed on plankton. Most everyone that talked about a megamouth so far was wrong. watch shark week for god sake. And i wont belive someones smart enough to be a sherk expert when they cant even spell(Alyssa & Sam)! Damn, that was annoying to read.

lovea posted on 2007-06-17 05:27:36

Its a basking shark, completely harmless unless you're plankton, although youve just missed it they turn up in Corwall in May and you can snorkel with them. I'd recommend it.
chunder posted on 2007-06-05 22:46:16

No, they're not. Megamouths belong to the genus Megachasma in the family Megachasmidae, while Basking sharks belong to the genus Cetorhinus, in the family Cetorhinidae. Basking sharks are also (A) much larger and (B) they like shallow water (hence the name "basking shark") rather than the extremely deep water the megamouth prefers.
A rock star posted on 2007-05-12 19:05:20

So is a basking shark and a megamouth the same or close to being the same?
someone posted on 2007-05-11 03:50:21

look i read about these guys all the time megamouths are real, they feed on small animals, and are harmless to humans. unless to get sucked in it's mouth but there not going to swim straight for you to eat you. some scientist did not even know it existed until around 1970-1980 when it swallowed a us navy ship anchor near hawaii

sorry not going to say posted on 2007-03-25 17:09:49

Riiiight. I am neither a marine biologist nor an "expert on sharks!!!!!!!!!" but a megamouth is in fact quite a large shark. Around the 4 metre mark if available information is correct.

it dont look like a shark at all. and are the paper things its teeth how does it eat?
Guest posted on 2006-06-17 01:16:39

This is a `Basking Shark`, no question of that fact. It is not inherently dangerous to humans and as mentioned feeds only on plankton. However, due to the fact it is a far few metres long and several tonnes in weight, and could crush with it's jaws pretty much anything that fits into its mouth, It could certainly be dangerous accidentally or intentionally if it feels threatened or harrassed.
Smaug posted on 2006-06-05 22:44:41

This is a very rare form of sharks. I have only seen them a few times and find Basking-Mouth sharks quite interesting.
M-O-W posted on 2006-05-26 05:03:50

it is not a mega mouth shark i am ai marine bioligist and it is very realy i see these basking sharks when i am researching but yes they are not uselly dangerous to humans but if provoked they use the mosterous body (tail fin) to knock you out of it way so that is the real story.
sam posted on 2006-04-30 10:32:10
