as we see a black hole passing by the stars that are far away behind it, we can detect a it, due to the distortion its massive gravity creates on the light of those stars. its just not as big as it appears in the image. if you get close enough to see it that size, you have already said bye bye long ago. by the way, I'm studing cosmology.

Ya,I don't think a black hole can be seen so easily...whithout any light ,how to see anything?Light cannot ever escape from the high attractive energy of the black hole. Thus,I'm so curious for the reality of the picture. However, this one is the most acceptabe picture of the black hole from all other pictures.

black holes are invisible you idiots

This ain't "real" blackhole. A black hole is a small object with gigantic gravity. "Small" was meant by having this gigantic ammount of Gravity that draws in. If you want to know how this "black hole" was made: A simple tool that wides out the point you click at in all directions.

Wow, after reading many other comments, I'm surprised many of you made it here. Seem's people don't know what a black hole is. This is what they look like, and this is not small.

That is exactly what a black hole looks like in space. I don't know what everyone else was expecting...

That look's cool it does not look like a blackhole. It look's like the sun with the moom in font of it.

lol some of you spelt sun wrong

the black hole needs to eat because it does not look big on my computer, and when a black hole sucks in something, it might get bigger.

situated in the galactic centre
neeharika posted on 2009-05-13 11:36:27

You sure this is not a regular black hole? If I am correct super black wholes are much larger and have things like stars swirling around them. But I guess this is just a picture.

thats a superb black hole.

Size doesn't matter. all that matters is that it has a gravitational field big enough that the escape velocity is faster than the speed of light. This causes it to look much bigger. because you cannot see anything within the event horizon.

Size? I think you mean mass...different things. What they mean is, if you took 43 of our suns and compressed that mass into the size of a grain of sand (or smaller) thats what a supermassive blackhole is. superMASSIVE. Like mass...lots of it, squished into a very very very tiny amount of space = a blackhole...spacetime cant take the strain of the gravity in the small amount of space and it becomes very warped and streched downward...
Guest posted on 2008-02-22 19:46:57

"Supermassive black holes are 43 million times the size of our son." Wrong. Sort of. Depends on what you mean by "black hole". The singularity itself is infinitely small: it is zero dimensional and of infinite density. It can only be described as a point in space, a single infinitely small coordinate. When people say that black holes are huge in size, they include in it the "event horizon", which is the distance from the singularity at which all escape is impossible. This boundary does exist thousands (or more) of kilometres from the singularity, but the "mass" part of the black hole is infinitely small.
Adam posted on 2008-01-29 22:40:23

black holes are compacted they have so much in so little space causing you to have to reach speeds faster than light speed just to break out a blackk hole is small in comparison to how much is compacted in it. whether its bigger than the sun or smaller than an atom in comparison to whats inside its small. very small.
jesse posted on 2008-01-19 20:20:06

it looks like a real one to me. you know whos the daddy. s.h.
stephen posted on 2008-01-05 01:21:29

I'm not really that knowlegable about these things so i could be wrong. I think its the singularity at the centre of the black hole thats infintesimally small, whereas (not sure if thats a word) the black hole (ie including the event horizon) is huge.
27 posted on 2007-09-28 00:10:42

Well, myself being a student of Astrophyics know for a fact that a black hole is infintesimally small. Black holes masses are large, but there volume (or size) is equal to zero. Therefore, they have no size. In other words, they are as small as anything can be.
physicsguy posted on 2007-09-21 07:35:04

I will have to disagree with you. Blackholes aren't tiny by any means. Supermassive black holes are 43 million times the size of our son. How is that small? We have one in the middle of every galaxy. Still think they are small?
King posted on 2007-08-23 15:58:26

nice drawing, but this is a fake one!!!! A blackhole is a very tiny structure surrounded by very luminous dusts and stars (gigantic structures), very luminous because they're considerably accelerated approaching the blackhole, the material density around a blackhole is very high and very enrgetic. Consequently this cannot be a real blackhole photoghaph, unfortunately I would say.
